The price of the imported red lentil rose on the retail markets in
the city over the week ending Friday.
Other commodity prices remained mostly unchanged.
The price of the red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada increased by Tk 5-Tk 10 a kilogram to Tk 85-Tk 90 a kg over the week.
Retailers said the prices of all varieties of imported red lentil rose on the retail markets as the wholesale prices of the commodity increased.
Importers, however, said that there was no reason for the increase in the retail price of red lentil as they had not raised its price.
Zakir Hossain, a retailer at Karwan Bazar, said the price of red lentil witnessed an upward trend for the last couple of days on the wholesale market and retailers had been forced to raise the price of the commodity.
Shafi Mahmud, president of Bangladesh Dal Babosayee Samity, said importers had not increased the price of red lentil but the price might increase due to supply chain disruption amid recent general strike and political unrest.
The price of fine variety of red lentil called ‘kangaroo’ remained unchanged and the commodity was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while the local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The prices of vegetables remained high on the retail market over the week.
Aubergine was retailing at Tk 40 a kg, cucumber at Tk 25 a kg, tomato at Tk 35 a kg, papaya at Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 30 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 40 a kg on Friday.
Green chilli price remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 60 a kg on Friday.
Potato price was also stable and it was selling at Tk 15 a kg on the day.
The price of egg remained unchanged and it was retailing at Tk 35-Tk 36 a hali (four pieces) in the city’s retail markets.
The local variety of onion was selling at Tk 35 a kg while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 30 a kg on Friday.
The prices of local variety of garlic and ginger remained unchanged and those were selling at Tk 80 kg and Tk 100 a kg respectively on the day while the imported garlic and ginger were selling at Tk 110 a kg and Tk 80 a kg respectively.
The prices of fish remained high in the city’s kitchen markets over the week.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250-Tk 320 a kg, katla at Tk 220-Tk 300 a kg, pangas at Tk 140-Tk 250 a kg and tilapia at Tk 140-Tk 160 a kg depending on their size and quality.
Broiler price decreased by Tk 5 a kg and it was selling at Tk 145-Tk 155 a kg on the day.
The prices of beef and mutton remained unchanged.
Beef was selling at Tk 280-Tk 300 a kg and mutton at Tk 425-Tk 450 a kg on Friday.
Both unpacked soya bean and super palm oil prices remained unchanged and the commodities were retailing at Tk 120 a kg and Tk 82 a kg respectively on the day.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 655 to Tk 665 at the Karwan Bazar kitchen market.
The price of sugar remained steady and the commodity was selling at Tk 48 a kg on the day.
The newly-harvested rice has started to arrive in the city’s markets and their prices are comparatively lower than that of old rice.
Fine varieties of miniket and najirshail were selling at Tk 42 a kg and Tk 46 a kg respectively while the old varieties were selling at Tk 46 a kg and Tk 50 a kg respectively on the day.
