Statisticians at an international conference at Dhaka University on Sunday stressed the need for improving the contents and teaching methods of statistics for its effective application.
They said this at the inaugural session of the First International Conference on Theory and Applications of Statistics at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Hall Bhaban at Dhaka University with the theme: New Challenges to Statistical Theory and Applications.
Dhaka University Statistics Department Alumni Association organised the three-day conference with the help of United Nations Population Fund, Thakral Information Systems Private Limited, Investment Corporation of Bangladesh and American Statistical Association.
Janata Bank Limited, Pubali Bank Limited and Standard Bank Limited financed the arrangements, said the organisers.
About one hundred statisticians from home and abroad are scheduled to join the conference, the sources said.
Information and cultural affairs minister Abul Kalam Azad joined the conference as chief guest while former Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor Kazi Saleh Ahamed, also DU statistics department trusty board chairman, presided over the session.
They emphasised the need for promoting the research works through the collaboration between the professionals in the international arena.
The participants of the conference also paid homage to Qazi Motahar Husain, the founder of the department.
DU vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique and statistics department professor Mir Masoom Ali, including other teachers of the department, also joined the conference.
