The central fish fair at the city’s Ramna Batamul looked dull with a small number of visitors on Thursday as inclement weather held back the city people from visiting the fair,
officials and participating traders said.
The number of visitors including students and officials of public and private organisations is expected to go up at the weekends on Friday and Saturday, they said.
The five-day central fish fair began on Wednesday with a view to making city dwellers acquainted with different species of local fishes and encourage them to cultivate and consume fishes.
A total of 43 stalls including government and private agencies have set up stalls in the fair, organised by the fisheries department of the fisheries and livestock ministry to mark National Fisheries Week 2013.
Various technologies of fish culture, its treatment, preservation and marketing and fish feeds are on display.
Besides, different types of freshwater and sea fishes are being showcased by both the government organisations and private enterprises.
The Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, a public sector organisation under the ministry of fisheries and livestock, is selling freshwater and marine fishes.
Per kilogram of Ruhi is priced at Tk 380-420
while Katla at Tk 400-450, Hilsha at Tk 1,050-1450, Aair at Tk 780, Bele at Tk 450, Poua at Tk 350, Rupchanda at Tk 1,050, Boal at Tk 650, Shrimp (Galda) at Tk 800, Telapia at Tk 180 and Pangus (river) at Tk 550, according to the BFDC chart.
BFDC officials said although customers were thin on Thursday because of inclement weather, they expected good sales on Friday and Saturday when the number of visitors would rise.
They claimed that fishes provided by the BFDC were formalin-free.
