Tk. 24 cr collected in first half of FY against target of Tk. 80 cr

Collection of income tax in Barisal taxation division is increasing but target may not be achieved for the FY 2008-09 for different reasons. Tk.24 crore only has been collected in first 6 months against target of Tk 80 crore Meantime, opening of Upazila level taxation office is under consideration that revenue collection will go up.
Radheshayam Roy, Commissioner of Barisal Divisional Taxation Office, stating these said that during the FY 2004-05 only this office exceeded the target of income tax collection out of last eight years since its functioning in July 2002.
Sources of income tax collection in Barisal division mainly depends on the collection of advance income taxes (AIT) from the sources of development works as the region has no major business or industrial infrastructure. Development works in the division was also less in last four years which caused decreased of tax collection amount, he said.
Official sources said that Barisal regional income tax office started functioning in July 1, 2002 with a list of 32,676 tax payers in six districts of Barisal division, which rose to 53,345.
Since the inauguration of this office, Tk.22.12 crore was collected in 2002-03 fiscal against target of Tk.27 crore, Tk.27.68 crore in 2003-04 against Tk.30 crore, Tk.38.23 crore in 2004-05 against 30 crore, Tk.43.29 crore against Tk.50 crore, Tk.44 crore in 2006-07 against Tk.57, crore and Tk.60.11 in 2007-08 against Tk.70 crore.
The target of income tax collection in Barisal region has been fixed for Tk.80 crore in 2008-09 fiscal and only Tk.24 crore has been collected in the first half of the fiscal till December 2008, the sources added.
To increase the collection of income taxes, the authority emphasized on introduction of hassle and harassment free system, opening advisory center, creation of tax payer friendly environment in the office, motivation for tax payment and opening of taxation office in major upazila level, the office informed.
