India’s home affairs minister Palaniappan Chidambaram arrived in Dhaka on Friday night on a two-day official visit at the invitation of the Bangladesh home minister, Sahara Khatun, officials said.
Sahara received Chidambaram at Shahjalal International Airport about 10:55pm, an airport official told New Age.
The Indian home minister will hold talks with Sahara this morning, the officials added.
They are expected to review bilateral cooperation in the fields of security, border management and other related issues such as the planned exchange of enclaves and territories in adverse possession, according to a senior home ministry official.
Chidambaram and Sahara are likely to sign an agreement on a ‘coordinated border management plan’ to check crimes such as killing, trafficking in persons and drug smuggling through India-Bangladesh borders.
Chidambaram is scheduled to call on the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and the foreign minister, Dipu Moni.
Chidambaram’s visit precedes the forthcoming visit of the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh, scheduled during September 6–7.
