The country’s overall point-to-point inflation inched down by 0.02 percentage point to 7.46 per cent in April which rose by 0.04 percentage point to 7.48 per cent in the previous month, said officials of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday.
The overall food inflation decreased to 8.95 per cent in April which rose to 8.96 per cent in March and 8.84 per cent in February.
The food inflation, however, increased slightly to 9.99 per cent in urban areas in the month from 9.98 per cent in the previous month.
The non-food inflation declined to 5.23 per cent in April from 5.26 per cent in March.
‘Ease in political situation and improved supply situation helped lower inflation in April,’ BBS director general Golam Mostafa Kamal said while releasing consumer price index for April.
When asked why the food inflation in urban areas rose in April, Golam Mostofa, however, failed to provide any reason.
‘Sometimes it increases, sometimes decreases. It’s not that the ratio will remain same every time,’ he said.
In February, the overall point-to-point inflation decreased by 0.06 percentage point to 7.44 per cent after three months of rise.
In January, the overall inflation increased by 0.15 percentage point to 7.50 per cent, in December by 0.20 percentage point to 7.35 per cent and in November it rose by 12 percentage point to 7.15 per cent.
In the urban areas, the overall point-to-point inflation rate was 7.96 in April compared to 7.98 per cent in March.
The non-food inflation in urban areas decreased to 5.83 per cent in April from 5.88 per cent in March.
In the rural areas, the overall point-to-point inflation decreased to 7.19 per cent in April from 7.21 per cent in the previous month.
In the rural areas, the food inflation decreased to 8.52 per cent in April from 8.53 per cent in March while the non-food inflation decreased to 4.81 per cent from 4.83 per cent.
