Abandonment of policies of World Bank and IMF demanded
Various organisations on Monday observed the International Day for Eradication of Poverty in 45 districts of the country.
The Campaign for Good Governance organised a human chain and staged a cultural programme in front of the National Museum, demanding opportunities of permanent and respectable employment for poor people, along with the social safety net.
Representatives of the CGG’s Dhaka Group, consisting of about 40 organisations including Green Voice and Banglar Mukh, also participated in the programme.
They demanded the assurance of education, health, residence, employment and just wages and an end to the privatization of the education and health sectors.
They urged the government to increase subsidy in the agricultural sector and ensure the farmers’ ownership of lands and seeds to establish a sustainable agricultural system and attain food sovereignty.
They further urged the government to prevent the handing over of fertile agricultural lands to non-agricultural sectors and abandon the policies of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Asian Development Bank and to frame pro-poor policies in the agriculture, education, health and industrial sectors.
CGG’s deputy-director Mohammad Shahidullah, member Sarah Zaman, Dhaka Campaign Group’s member Bilkis Akhtar and Green Voice’s member SM Hirok were also present at the programme.
The CGG also organised human chains, rallies
