The 19th International Day of Persons with Disabilities will be observed today in the country as elsewhere across the world with an aim to promote a better understanding of disability issues with a focus on the rights of persons with disabilities.
The theme of the day this year is ‘Keeping the Promise: Mainstreaming Disability in the Millennium Development Goals towards 2015 and beyond.’
According to the World Health Organisation, about
650 million people with disabilities account for about 10 per cent of the world population and about 80 per cent of them live in developing countries.
Different government and non-governmental organisations have planned programmes to observe the day.
The social welfare ministry and the National Forum of Organisations Working with the Disabled will hold a discussion in the Osmani Memorial Hall auditorium at 10:00am.
They will also hold a rally and a cultural programme on the occasion.
