A three-day international conference on ‘Recent Advances in Physics’ began at Dhaka University on Saturday.
University teachers and scientists at the inaugural session of the conference emphasised technological development in all sectors to make the digital Bangladesh programme a success.
The DU physics department, in collaboration with Dhaka University, University Grants Commission and the ministry of science and ICT, has organised the conference at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university.
The minister for science and ICT, Yeafesh Osman, was present in the programme as chief guest where he said, ‘We are living in a world where technological developments are happening at a very rapid pace but only for the affluent.’
‘The spin-off from technologies like nano-science should reach our citizens in the shortest possible time,’ he added.
He urged the financiers in the country to make more investment in technology to develop it locally by involving the scientists and physicists of the country.
He also said the present government had taken concrete steps for generating power using the nuclear technology but people of Bangladesh needed to develop their skills in this arena to utilise this technology efficiently.
The Dhaka University vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, said, ‘We must remember that education and research in physics can amply reduce many global uncertainties and can solve the complexities of the contemporary world.’
He said Dhaka University was trying to provide a favourable research environment that would encourage the scientists to take on the most challenging research questions relevant to the needs of Bangladesh.
He emphasised that Bangladeshi scientists should find out the solutions to the dire problems like climate change and pollution faced by Bangladesh.
More than ten eminent top-level international scientists from six different countries including the USA, the UK, Italy, Japan, Korea and India are taking part in the conference.
The inaugural session was presided over by the chairman of physics department and conference president Sultana Shafi.
The pro-vice-chancellor, Harun-or-Rashid, was present in the programme as special guest.
Vice-president of the conference organising committee AFM Yusuf Haider delivered the welcome speech.
