‘With its singular force to eliminate social and ethnic distinctions, leaving but the movement of bodies in their essence, of human beings returning to their pure expression, unique and shared, dance can unite all’.
So writes French choreographer and dancer Mourad Merzouki as International Dance Day 2014 message.
Today is the day to celebrate the freedom of body and mind, to celebrate the unity of people with a ‘shared and unique’ physical art that is so ancient and powerful.
International Dance Day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Council, a UNESCO partner NGO, and is celebrated on April 29 every year.
Like previous years, Bangladeshi dance artistes will celebrate the day with colourful and vibrant programmes, along with their peers and comrades across the world.
Bangladesh Dance Artists’ Association, the umbrella organisation which accommodates dance troupes across the country and promote dance as a performing art, is totally set to celebrate the day.
A weeklong celebration programme will conclude today. Today’s programme will kick off with placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in the morning. Then a colourful procession will walk from Shaheed Minar to Press Club and end at Shilpakala.
A seminar will be held at 11am at the conference room of BSA where speakers will deliver on the
topic Nritye Tomar Muktir Rup.
In the evening, the concluding programme will be held at National Theatre Hall of BSA. A lifetime achievement award will be conferred on Sharmin Hossain, president of Chittagong branch of Bangladesh Dance Artists’ Association.
The celebration will end with presentation of dance recitals by different troupes.
