International Day of Older Persons 2012 was observed on Monday across the country through different programmes. The theme of the day was ‘Longevity: Shaping the Future’.
Government and non-government organisations took up various programmes to mark the day.
Bangladesh Probin Adhikar Forum brought out a procession from the National Press Club where they urged the government to form a separate ministry for the elderly people and to allocate government land for building homes for the elderly persons across the country.
To mark the day, Department of Social Services formed a human chain in front of Betar Bhaban at Agargaon.
They also organised a discussion, photo exhibition and cultural programmes to mark the day.
The day was internationally observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.
