Millions of film lovers mourned the deaths of iconic Indian actress Suchitra Sen, comedy king Robin Williams, popular Hollywood actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luise Rainer. Bollywood actor Sadashiva Amrapurkar, a celebrated onscreen villain and comedian also recently passed away. Undisputed queen of Bengali cinema Suchitra Sen died at Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata on January 17 at the age of 82. Her career began with Shesh Kothay in 1952. She rose to iconic status with films like Bimal Roy’s Devdas (1955), Aandhi (1975) and many Bengali films including Harano Sur, Agni Parikkha, Saptapadi, Shapmochan and others.
Suchitra became a household name for all Bangla film lovers. She made the most outstanding partnership with co- actor Uttam Kumar, another legend of Bangla filmdom.
Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams has died at age 63 on August 11.
Williams, a four-time Oscar nominee, won a supporting actor Oscar for Good Will Hunting for his portrayal of a wise and morose psychologist. He most recently starred in CBS’ comedy The Crazy Ones, which lasted only one season. He was nominated for a People’s Choice Award for his role as an advertising executive on the comedy, in which Sarah Michelle Gellar played his daughter.
Luise Rainer was a German-born Austrian and American film actress. She was the first person to win multiple Academy Awards and the first person to win them consecutively. At the time of her death, she was the longest-lived actress ever to have received an Academy Award.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in the bathroom of his West Village, Manhattan apartment by a friend – playwright and screenwriter David Bar Katz on February 2, 2014. Hoffman was 46 years old. He rose to fame with the biographical film Capote (2005), which dramatized Truman Capote’s experience of writing his true crime novel In Cold Blood (1966).
