A seminar on ‘Origin and development of the Bangladeshi Literature in English’ was held at Islamic University in Kushtia on Tuesday.
The Department of English of IU organised the seminar on PhD thesis at the second floor of Rabindra-Nazrul Arts’ Building of the university in the morning.
Dhaka City College English department Professor Elham Hossain addressed the seminar as the main discussant with IU English department chairman Professor Miah Md Rashiduzzaman in the chair.
Abdus Salam, a PhD fellow of the English department, presented the article under the supervision of Islamic University’s former vice-chancellor and the university’s English department Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari.
Around one hundred teachers, students and officials of the university took part in the seminar.
IU former vice-chancellor Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari said that this was the first ever research attempt, so far as he knew, to write a history of Bangladeshi Literature in English based on inadequate secondary sources.
This initial research would give revealing insight into Bangladeshis writing in English or Bangladeshi English literature, locate its position in South-Asian writing in English, and finally situate it in the global context.
‘It would also help catch people’s attention to the budding Bangladeshi English writers, many of whose writings have already earned huge critical acclaim at home and abroad. I’m happy to be working on it’, he said.
