The agitating teachers of Jahangirnagar University have given a 20-hour ultimatum to the vice-chancellor, Professor Anwar Hossain, to resign.
They put forth the ultimatum in a press conference held on the campus on Tuesday.
The convener of the General Teachers Forum, Professor Hanif Ali, said they would launch tougher programmes if their demand was not met within the deadline.
The teachers, taking position inside the compound of the VC’s house, have been confining the VC since Sunday night, pressing for his resignation.
They have alleged that a proposal of holding a discussion has been sent to the VC but he refused it.
The General Teachers’ Forum member secretary, Professor Kamrul Ahsan, has said the agitation programme will continue until the VC resigns.
Meanwhile, after ending the weeklong work abstention from October 24 to 31, the JUTA initiated the all-out strike for an indefinite period from November 2 as the VC did not resign within the deadline.
They have continued boycotting classes and halting the university transport services.
On the other hand, the VC, in a press release, has said some teachers have been besieging his house violating his rights as a citizen.
‘I will not resign following their illogical demand,’ he added.
The JU unit Chhatra Front held another press conference on the day, seeking the chancellor’s intervention in resolving the university’s unrest over the matter.
Since April 2013, the JU teachers have been on the movement demanding the VC’s resignation raising some 18 allegations including his rough behavior with the teachers and staffs, making offensive comments on media, anomalies in the admission process and misuse of the university’s fund.
