Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami this year is going to race for the mayoral post in the Rajshahi City Corporation polls independently.
The BNP leaders, however, are trying to reach an understating with Jamaat and hoping that they would be able to dissuade Jamaat from the race.Emaj Uddin Mandal, acting general secretary of Rajshahi city unit Jamaat, told New Age that every time Jamaat made way for the BNP but BNP never gave any support to Jamaat.
He also said in the past mayoral election Jamaat worked for BNP-backed candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul but BNP did not make space for Jamaat during the national election.
Not only that, Jamaat did not get any support from BNP and its associate organisations during any rally, general strike and protest programmes although Jamaat-Shibir men took part in all programmes called by BNP, Emaj Uddin added.
Meanwhile, Mizanur Rahman Minu, BNP joint secretary and former mayor of Rajshahi, told New Age, ‘We are continuing discussion with leaders of Jamaat. We will able to reach an understanding.’
Six candidates are going to contest the polls for the mayoral post in the city corporation election scheduled to be held on June 15.
They are Rajshahi city Awami League general secretary, AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, also the outgoing mayor, BNP city unit general secretary Shafikul Haque Milon, Jubadal convener Mossaddek Hossain Bulbul, detained Rajshahi city Jamaat general secretary Mohammod Jahangir and two independent candidates Habibur Rahman and Mozammel Haque.
