The Japan government is keen to provide assistance to Bangladesh for building capacity of the country’s nursing system through providing various kinds of skill
development training as well as institutional support to nurses.
The Japan government is planning to provide its support to Bangladesh in this regard though Japan International Cooperation Agency.
This was revealed Saturday while the president of University of Kochi of Japan, Hiroko Minami, delivered a special lecture at Dhaka Medical College in front of nearly 700 nursing faculties, nursing students, doctors and nurses.
Minami has served as an outstanding leader in nursing education, research and administration not only in Japan but throughout the world. Her career includes the president of the International Council of Nurses.
Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka Nursing College, KEIAI Machizukuri Foundation and JICA Bangladesh jointly organised the lecture titled ‘Nursing in the World: Reflections on the past and the present for the future’.
As Minami is the president of the Disaster Global Leadership, a five-year PhD programme, she encouraged the nursing students to join the programme for pursuing the higher education.
She clarified that the nurses’ roles and scope of work did not concern only supporting medical doctors at hospital settings, but vary from promotion of health in the community level through treatments at the hospital level to the rehabilitation of patients. ‘Nurses are the primary agents of delivering ‘Care’ services,’ she said.
Referring to Florence Nightingale’s success in reducing the death rate from 42 per cent to 2 per cent during her service at the Crimean War, Minami emphasised the importance of improving the environment surrounding patients, such as sanitary condition, clean air and food.
Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh office Takao Toda, DMC Principal Professor Quazi Deen Mohammad, DMCH director Brigadier General Md Mustafizur Rahman, and Dhaka Nursing College Principal Ira Dibra and Chairman of KEIAI Machizukuri Foundation Hideya Hori were present as speakers.
