The fortnight ‘Jasim Palli Mela’ coinciding the celebration of 106th birth anniversary of Palli Kabi Jasimuddin which was observed on January 1, begins today at Gobindapur in the suburb of the district town. Labour, Employment and Expatriates welfare Minister Eng Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain will inaugurate the fair as the chief guest while Advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr Towfik-e-Elahi Chowdhury Bir Bikram, will be the special guest in the inaugural function to be held at the Mela premises.
The Mela is being held as an annual celebration under the auspices of Jasim Foundation, the prime organisation to preserve poet Jasimuddin’s creations. It is headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur. The fair has been delayed by few days which was scheduled to begin from the birthday of the poet due to parliamentary and Upazila elections.
About 250 stalls have been constructed in the fair venue adjacent to poet’s tomb and ancestral home of Jasimuddin on the bank of river Kumar where ‘Sojon Badiar Ghat’ is also located.
Arrangements have been made for circus, jari gan, Kabi gan, Bichar gan, Gazir gan and other cultural activities based on Jasimuddin’s writings will be held during the Mela. Besides, stalls will feature handicraft articles including ‘Nakshi Kantha’ cottage industries products and other rural based goods commonly used by the villagers.
Measures have been made to ensure smooth communication facilities, power supply, water supply and sanitation facilities and security arrangements. A museum to preserve the poet’s works will be soon constructed here by the government. Necessary land has been acquired surrounding the poet’s ancestral home for the purpose.
