A four-day jatra, which is a form of traditional theatre, festival began at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday evening.
Organsied by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as a part of Jatra Development Policy 2012, the festival is the forth edition of an attempt to register capable jatra troupes from across the country.
This year, the jatra palas are judged by the noted actor Mamunur Rashid, SM Mohsin, the famous jatra artistes Milan Kanti Dey and Tapash Sarkar, along with the director of film and theatre department of the academy Sarah Ara Mahmud, and theatre researcher professor Afsar Ahmed.
Twenty seven jatra troupes from different districts will participate at the festival.
On the opening day seven troupes presented their productions.
Jatra troupe Joyjatra from Dhaka staged a pala titled Anarkali. Niw Kajol Opera from Narsindi staged Bhikarir Chhele. Dhaka based troupe Seba Jatra Unit staged Apon Dulal. The Jassore based troupe with the same name, Seba Jatra Unit, staged Kalankini Badhu. Khowai Opera from Habigonj staged Hingsar Porinam. Khulna based troupe Swadesh Opera staged Nihoto Golap. New Sobuj Opera from Kustia staged Meghe Dhaka Taara. And Dhaka based Sima Opera staged Sagor Bhasa.
