CORONARY ARTERY BLOCKAGE
JBFH launches non-surgical treatment
Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital on Thursday commercially launched non-surgical treatment for the coronary artery blockage patients for the first time in Bangladesh.
The patients who have coronary artery blockage but not suitable for stenting or bypass surgery could be treated by this treatment called ‘extracorporeal shockwave myocardial revascularisation therapy,’ said health experts.
Besides, the patients who already underwent stenting or bypass, but still complain of chest pain, will also be benefited from the treatment, they added.
Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital formally offered this treatment to its patient at a press conference held at its office.
MA Baqui, chief cardiologist of JBFH and also ESMR specialist, said, ‘Studies showed that about 15 to 20 per cent of coronary artery disease are not suitable for stenting or bypass surgery.’
Moreover there are patients, suffering from different types of diseases like kidney diseases, stroke and not suitable for the existing treatment, could be benefited from the treatment.
ESMR is a kind of high energy sound therapy which forms new natural blood vessels which improves the blood supply to the affected portion of the heart, Baqui said.
A patient needs total nine therapies — three therapies every alternative day, another three therapies after 21 days and three more therapies after 21 days.
The patients are not required to stay at the hospital for taking treatment, the physicians said, adding that it took about two hours per session.
A total of 50 patients — 43 male and 7 female — were already treated at the hospital since September last year, they said.
‘We are following up 20 patients and among them 15 patient are satisfied,’ he added.
The total cost of the treatment is Tk 1,90,000, they said. Among others SA Nayeem, chairman of JBFH, was present.
