A leader of class four employees’ association of Jagannath University stabbed his fellow to death on the campus over extra marital affairs on Friday. The deceased was identified as Kamal Hossain, 22, a daily basis worker of Jagannath University Registrar office, hailed from Mymenshing district. Eyewitness and campus sources said, the association general secretary Iqbal Hossain had developed an extra marital affair with Sumi Akhter, wife of the university’s chemistry department worker (member of lower subordinate services) Harun-or-Rashid since long. Kamal spotted the two as they met each other secretly.
Sensing trouble, Iqbal threatened Kamal to keep the incident a secret. But at one stage, most of the workers at the university came to know about the matter. Being enraged, Iqbal called Kamal to meet him on the second floor of Abakash Bhaban of the campus at around 10.00 am.
As soon as Kamal came to meet Iqbal, he was stabbed with a knife by Iqbal. On information, former assistant Imam of JnU central mosque Anowar rushed critically injured Kamal to Sumona Medical. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on duty doctors declared him dead at around 12:30 pm.
Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Kotowali police station, told The Independent, “We have arrested the accused soon after the incident, also detained Harun and his wife Sumi for interrogation.”
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post mortem.
A murder case was filed with the police station in this regard.
“We have already visited the spot and recovered the knife reportedly used in the killing, legal action is under process against the accused,” he added.
Prof Dr Mijanur Rahman, vice-chancellor of the university, told The Independent, “A probe body will be formed in this regard shortly and action will be taken against all the responsible.”
