The absence of permanent vice-chancellor has turned out to be a major stumbling block in the running the academic and administrative affairs of the Jahangirnagar University (JU)smoothly and efficiently.
Prof Muniruzzaman was appointed acting vice-chancellor of the JU about one year ago. He is still performing his responsibility as acting VC much to the detriment of the university. This has been hampering the proper running of the academic and administrative activities of the university, university sources said. A chaotic situation has been prevailing in this highest seat of learning. Many of the teachers are not taking classes regularly. Besides, examination of different departments has either been deferred or postponed for no cogent reason. This in turn is contributing to session jam creating frustration among the students, the sources added.
An official of the controller office said that holding of examinations and publications of results of a good number of departments have remained stalled due to non-cooperation of some teachers and lack of strict enforcement of discipline.
With the coming of the Awami League ( AL) to power, the pro-Al teachers of the university have embarked on lobbying for the coveted post of the vice-chancellor.They are giving more time for mustering support for capturing the posts of VC and pro-VC and less attention to taking classes, a teacher of the university said requesting anonymity.
Most of the teachers and general students hold the view the government should choose such a person as VC of the university who is endowed with excellent academic record and fair administrative ability.
Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir, a noted scientist and experienced teacher, told the New Nation that the government should select an experienced, skilled and dedicated person to crown the post of vice-chancellor.
