The teachers of Jahangirnagar University continued their agitation for the third consecutive day on Saturday and laid siege to the administrative building, demanding
resignation of the vice-chancellor, Professor Anwar Hossain.
‘We (teachers) will continue the siege programme until the VC resigns from his post,’ said Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder, president of JU Teachers’ Association.
Professor Ajit Kumar said they received a letter from the university authorities. ‘But, we (teachers) did not feel it necessary to open the letter.’
The JUTA leader, however, assured that academic activities at the university would go on uninterrupted.
The students of the university welcomed and expressed happiness over teachers’ return to work.
Since April 27, the teachers have been observing work abstention demanding resignation of the VC on allegation of taking inadequate punitive measure against JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League general secretary Rajib Ahmed Russell.
Russell allegedly assaulted Nurul Haque, a lecturer of economics department and syndicate member, on April 6.
The teachers, however, returned to work on Thursday.
Earlier on Wednesday, the JUTA members, following a meeting, declared the incumbent VC as persona non-grata on the campus and laid siege to his office demanding his resignation.
JUTA also decided not to allow administrative activities, including senate, syndicate and academic council meetings, to be held under the incumbent VC.
In the face of the teachers’ agitation, the authorities were forced to cancel three Syndicate meetings and the annual senate meeting on Friday in which the university budget was supposed to be placed.
When asked about the senate meeting, JU registrar Abu Bakr Siddique told the news agency that the authorities were yet to make any decision about holding the meeting.
Despite repeated attempts, VC Professor Anwar Hossain could not be reached over phone for his comments.
