Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Anwar Hossain, on Sunday, announced to resign from his post from Dhaka’s Uttara where the VC was discharging his duty as VC. Talking to The Independent, the VC said ‘I have decided to resign as JU VC and will submit my resignation letter to Chancellor Abdul Hamid soon’. ‘I sent an application to the Chancellor and the President seeking to meet with him; then I will announce my resignation formally,’ the VC added. Earlier, yesterday he announced to quit as VC at a press conference at JU senate hall but later he backtracked from his decision saying “students wants him back at JU”. Marking the University day JU administration arranged a colourful rally but few teachers and students were present there while over 2,000 teachers, students and staff participated at the procession by agitating teachers on the same occasion.
A team of police escorted Professor Anwar out of the campus on December 5 in the face of relentless protests by teachers-students, upon directives from the government high-ups, an initiative seen as a prelude to his removal.
Agitating teachers on December 16 forced Professor Anwar Hossain to leave the campus as per their earlier decision of not letting him enter there. Since then Professor Anwar had been carrying his charge renting a house in capital’s Uttara.
Demanding execution of the chancellor’s directives to organise the VC panel election to replace Professor Anwar Hossain, the agitating teachers have long been carrying out protest reaming off all activities at administrative building. On November 6 chancellor directed 4 directions asking the JU authority to arrange a VC panel election, soon.
