Rahatul Ferdous’ five-for helped the Bangladesh Under-19s begin their English campaign with a win over the England Development Programme U-17 squad in a
rain-interrupted warm-up match in Loughborough on Friday.
The left-arm spinner claimed 5-29 as EDP were dismissed for 204 in 49.5 overs before the junior Tigers posted 187-5 in 42 overs on the back of an unbeaten half-century from wicketkeeper Jashim Uddin to claim victory.
The match represents the only warm-up for the tourists prior to their triangular series involving England and Pakistan U-19s. The series begins on August 5 when the two visiting teams play each other.
EDP’s Haseeb Hamid (66) and Kieron Smith (50) made half-centuries, while Aneurin Donald chipped in with 40 runs to provide the hosts with the perfect platform to post well over 200 runs after electing to bat first.
Ferdous received strong support from leg-spinner Jubair Hossain and pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who claimed two wickets apiece, as the U-19s bowled the EDP out in the 50th over and restricted them to 204.
Bangladesh began their reply on the wrong foot, slipping to 74-5 in the 21st over, before Jashim and Nazmul Hossain put the tourists back on course with an unbeaten stand of 113 for the sixth-wicket.
Jashim made 54 not out and Nazmul remained unbeaten on 41 when rain brought an early close to the match and gave the tourists a morale-boosting result.
