The Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association on Monday called off their month-long protest, showing respect of the High Court order issued on last Wednesday.
JUTA had been besieging the university administrative building for 38 days started on June 20, demanding the resignation of vice-chancellor Professor Anwar Hossain blaming him for his failure in the campus.
Earlier, the High Court on Wednesday directed the Jahangirnagar University authorities to take immediate necessary steps to continue university administrative functions.
The HC also asked the government, University Grants Commission, the JU administration, the inspector general of police and JU Teachers’ Association to take action in this regard.
JUTA did not stop their protest programme and mentioned the HC order as shameful vowing to continue protest till they received a written statement from High Court.
‘We have decided to call off our protest programme showing respect to High Court,’ JUTA president Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder said.
‘We will enforce fresh steps in our protest programme after Eid vacation,’ he added.
Mentionable, the HC came up with the order and rule after hearing a petition jointly filed by four teachers and a student on July 7 seeking necessary HC directives in this regard.
JUTA has been demanding resignation of VC Professor Anwar Hossain since April 7 for not expelling JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Rajib Ahmed Rasel for his alleged assault on a teacher.
Besides, General Teachers Forum, a platform of the agitating teachers, announced all-out strike on campus today (tomorrow) demanding VC’s removal and will launch next course of action, said its convener Prof Hanif Ali.
