GB employees to hold demo today
Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata League chief Abdul Kader Siddiqui and Liberal Democratic Party president Oli Ahmed on Monday met Muhammad
Yunus at Grameen Bank Bhaban in the capital’s Mirpur.
Both the leaders, also the leading freedom fighters, expressed their firm commitment to protect the integrity of Grameen Bank, said the Yunus Centre executives in an email.
Kader Siddiqui assured that he would always work to protect the integrity of Grameen Bank and its founder Muhammad Yunus, the email read.
Oli Ahmed visited the Nobel laureate to place his support to the Grameen Bank and its 8.4 million women borrowers, said the email. He also praised Yunus for winning the US Congressional Gold Medal.
Yunus, who was relieved of the post of GB managing director by a Bangladesh Bank directive in 2011 on the ground that he had crossed the age of 60, on Friday said that the government-formed commission had made some ‘crazy’ recommendations that included splitting the institution into 19 entities.
Set up in 1983, the Grameen Bank in 2006 won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with its founding managing director Muhammad Yunus.
The Awami League-led government has taken a series of steps targeting the bank drawing criticism from home and abroad. Amid the situation, the Grameen Bank Employees Association today will wear black badge protesting the government’s move against the Bank. They would stand up in front the Bank at 12:45pm today for 15 minutes.
