Audience became nostalgic by legendary singer Feroza Begum’s soulful presentation of ‘Ei ki go shesh dan’, composed by her husband Kamol Dasgupta, as the concluding number of the musical programme organised to celebrate 100th birth anniversary of the legendary composer, which fell on April 09, 2012.
Her soulful, emotional and melodious voice, while presenting another melancholic tune composed by Kamol Dasgupta titled ‘Shotek borosh porey’, made audience members cry, on Saturday at the Shilpakala Academy.
Kamol Dasgupta’s youngest son Shafin Ahmed, a band star, paid tribute by presenting popular songs composed by his father such as ‘Kanthe amar nishidin’ and ‘Eshe chhile madhujamini’ at the programme.
Another seasoned singer Asaf-ud-Daula, Feroza Begum’s brother, conveyed his respect to his brother-in-law by presenting a ghazal ‘Ghumer o chhaya’ at the show. Recalling the contribution of the legendary composer, Asaf-ud-Daula, a former bureaucrat, mentioned the versatile talent of the great composer, while presenting an Urdu gazal ‘Tasbiri mera dil’ at the celebration programme.
It was, however, not only a family programme. Leading singers of the country like Sabina Yasmin, Syed Abdul Hadi, Fatema-tuz-Zohra, Subir Nandi, Ferdaus Ara and Shakila Zafar presented some timeless songs composed by Kamol Dasgupta, at the event organised by the Kamol Dasgupta Foundation.
Legendary composer Kamol Dasgupta (1912-1974) had composed over 8,500 songs, including the melodies for about 400 Nazrul songs. He composed the music for about eighty Bangla films, most of which received huge popularity. He sang modern songs in Bangla, Urdu, Hindi and Tamil.
Leading singer of the country Sabina Yasmin moved the audience at the programme by presenting the evergreen melodies ‘Emone borosha chhilo sedin’ and ‘Tumi esechhile jibone’.
Popular singer Syed Abdul Hadi, in his stentorian voice, presented ‘Tumi ki ekhon dekechho swapan’ and ‘Prithibi amare chay’, while Shakila Zafar presented two Nazrul songs composed by Kamol Dasgupta, ‘Tuphano mail’ and ‘Ami banophul go’.
Eminent Nazrul singer Fatima-Tuz-Zohera presented ‘Mor jiboner duti raatey’ and ‘E bhora badol-e’, composed by the legend.
Komal Dasgupta’s memorable songs ‘Menechhi go haar menechhi’ and ‘Duti pakhi dui tirey’ were rendered by Subir Nandi.
Ferdous Ara’s presentation of ‘Bhuli nai bhuli nai’ and ‘Jani bahire amar tumi’ was also included in the musical programme, directed by Sujeo Shyam.
Earlier, an informative essay on the life and works of Komal Dasgupta was read by Asaf-Ud-Daula. He also informed that noted singers of this region Angurbala, Mrinal Kanti, Feroza Begum, Sattya Chowdhury, Talat Mahmud, Kanan Devi, Juthina Ray and many others gained popularity by singing songs composed by Kamol Dasgupta.
A documentary depicting rare photographs of Kamol Dasgupta was also screened at the show. A recording of Kamol Dasgupta’s own voice singing ‘Katodin dekhina tomay’ was also played at the programme.
