Accusing Khaleda Zia of writing a letter to the US government seeking withdrawal of GSP facility to Bangladesh, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Friday said the opposition leader is conspiring to destroy the country’s export-oriented RMG sector, according to UNB. “Khaleda Zia had written a letter to the US government and this is how she has made the US government to suspend the GSP facility to Bangladesh,” he said while talking to journalists at the local Circuit House in the afternoon.
The Information Minister alleged that Khaleda Zia has taken a stance against the country while trying to campaign against the current government.
The US has suspended trade privileges for Bangladesh until the country improves workers’ safety conditions in the clothing industry.
The move will bring tariffs back on some of Bangladesh’s exports to US markets under the programme, known as the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).
Turning to the current political crisis, Inu said only elected government cannot make democracy safe as elected governments over the last 22 years have failed to ensure the safe march forward of democracy.
“It’s not possible to present the nation a safe democracy unless communal politics, extremists and war criminals could be eliminated,” he said.
About the government’s relations with the mass media, the Information Minister said the current regime has been working for the development of the mass media and it has no hostility with it.
“The mass media can never be the propaganda machine and the centre of spreading falsehood and character assassination. We want to see vibrant, dynamic and fast-growing mass media in the country,” Inu said.
Bogra Press Club president Rezaul Hasan Ranu, local journalists’ leaders and leaders of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal also spoke at the press briefing.
Our Correspondent adds: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Friday termed BNP-Jamaat and Hefazat-e-Islami as great liars.
He said, Khaleda Zia’s government was totally corrupted and murderous. Their main objective is to loot while in power.
But the people of the country will not fulfill their hope. He was addressing as the chief guest in the conference of the district Sromik Jote at Satmatha, Bogra.
The council was inaugurated by Jatiya Sromik Jote Central President Shirin Sultana and the programme was presided over by the district convener of conference committee Shah Alam Khokon.
Inu also said, if Khaleda Zia does not look into the interest of women, she will be a sick Prime Minister. Khaleda Zia failed to prove her allegation to have killed 2,500 leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islami by the government at Shapla Chattar in the capital on May 6.
Khaleda Zia is in politics with the brokers of Pakistan Jamaat-Shibir and Hefazat-e-Islami who want to be a militant country. We should stand against them to protect our independence, he added.
