Three-time prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been laid to rest beside her husband, late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
Her funeral prayer (namaz-e-janaza) was held across the inner ground of the Jatiya Sangsad around 3pm today (31 December).
Following the janaza her body was taken to Zia Uddyan where she was buried with state honour around 4:45pm.
Millions of people from all walks of life joined the funeral today to say goodbye to the uncompromising leader.
The namaz-e-janaza of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban today.
The prayer began at 3:02pm.
The khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque led the janaza, while BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan conducted the proceedings.
She will be laid to eternal rest beside her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus reached Parliament Complex to join Khaleda Zia’s janaza.
Meanwhile, foreign ministers and high-level dignitaries from across South Asia have converged in Dhaka today (31 December) to pay their final respects to former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma arriving in the capital last night (30 December), India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar reaching Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:30am, Bhutan’s Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister Lyonpo D N Dhungyel arriving earlier in the morning, and Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also landed in Dhaka later today to attend the funeral.
The coffin carrying the body of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia arrived at the National Parliament grounds at the capital’s Manik Mia Avenue around 11:48am.
A motorcade carrying her body left Tarique Rahman’s Gulshan residence with state protocol around 11am.
BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir are accompanying her in another vehicle
Earlier, at 8:34am, her coffin, draped in the national flag of Bangladesh, departed from Evercare Hospital towards Gulshan this morning (31 December).
A large number of law enforcement personnel were deployed in and around the hospital and along key roads to maintain security and manage traffic.
