The Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee on Monday demanded adequate allocation in the upcoming national budget for implementation of
the development projects in the south-western region.
They made the demand at a human chain from 11:30am till 12:30pm at the Picture Palace Cinema intersection in the city.
The human chain was followed by a rally at the same venue.
Speakers at the rally demanded that the government allocate adequate fund in the next national budget for supply of gas to Khulna through pipelines, construction of a modern rail station, introduction of Khulna-Kolkata rail service, Padma Bridge of Mawa, modernisation of Mongla port, construction of an airport, reopening of all closed mills and industries including Khulna newsprint mill and Dada match factory, establishment of an agriculture university, construction of Shilpakala Academy Complex and a full-fledged TV station in Khulna.
Presided over by the organisaion leader SM Shahnewaz Ali, the rally was addressed, among others, by Awami League leader Shyamol Shingha Roy, president of city unit of CPB HM Shahadat, general secretary of city unit of Mahila Parishad Rashu Akhter, president of Dada Match Factory Workers Union Delwar Hossain and joint secretary of Khulna city unit of Shadhinata Chikitshak Parishad Dr Tarok Chandra Roy.
Speakers of the rally threatened greater movement for an indefinite period if all these demands were not met by the government.
