The Khulna regional office of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh on Monday started selling onion at Tk 55 per kilogram from 15 outlets under five police stations in the Khulna city.
Five trucks, each with 500 kilograms of onion, have been deployed in the city for open market sale of this essential cooking ingredient. The TCB will sell one kilogram of onion to each customer till October 13 through its enlisted dealers via trucks, said senior executive of TCB’s regional office Md Bazlur Rashid.
He hoped that the price of onion would become normal in the next few days as a result of the open market sale by the TCB.
A special surveillance team will monitor to prevent onion sale in the black market, he said.
Now this essential cooking item is being sold between Tk 75 and Tk 80 per kilogram in city’s kitchen markets.
When contacted, the president of Khula Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kazi Aminul Huq blamed an organised syndicate of unscrupulous businessmen for the price spiral of onion.
