The physicians of Khulna Shishu Hospital observed a two-hour work stoppage on Thursday in protest against the attack on the hospital’s residential medical officer, Shah Muradur Rahman, by the police. The victim says four constables of the Khulna Metropolitan Police stopped him on the Khanjahan Ali road under the Sadar police on Wednesday night while he was going to the hospital and wanted to know his identity and destination.
The doctor alleged that he showed his ID but the police checked his body and seized a mobile phone and some money from his possession and later, beat him as he protested against their action.
‘They also broke my motorcycle,’ he added.
Later the Sadar police officer-in-charge, Shahabuddin Azad came to the place and handled the situation rescuing him from the on-duty police, he said.
The work stoppage was withdrawn following the assurance from the KMP commissioner, Shafiqur Rahman, that the accused police would be punished for their inappropriate action.
The doctors said they gave an ultimatum of 24 hours from 12:00pm on Thursday to the commissioner to punish the accused police; after that they would start the movement for an indefinite period.
