The LabAid hospital authorities have admitted their negligence in the treatment of a Dhaka University student in the wake of protests against them.
Mostafizur Rahman Masum, a fourth-year student of political science, was diagnosed with tumour in February this year and he was receiving treatment under doctor Amjad Hussain of the hospital.
The hospital authorities also assured that they would provide the patient with the adequate financial support for treatment in an emergency meeting with the DU vice-chancellor and the victim’s family at the VC’s house Sunday night.
The meeting also decided to send Mostafiz to Singapore as soon as possible.
Among others, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Medical University VC Pran Gopal Dutta, DU proctor Amzad Ali, political science professor Dil Rawshan Jinnat Ara Naznin, LabAid hospital executive director AM Shamim, managing committee director Dr Mahbubul Islam, the accused doctor Amjad Hussain, local law maker Mostafa Jala Mohiduddin and Mostafizur’s family were present in the meeting.
A three-member committee, comprising with DU VC AAMS Arefin Siddique, BSMMU VC Pran Gopal Datta and political science professor Dil Rawshan Zinnat Ara Naznin, was also formed to consider the justifications for financial support for the victim family.
The DU VC said Mostafizur would be sent to Singapore soon.
DU proctor said, ‘If there is no hope for his life, the hospital authorities are bound to compensate a specific figure of money, not less than Tk 30 lakhs.’
Earlier on last Wednesday, several hundred students besieged the hospital at Dhanmondi in the capital for around five hours, demanding compensation and punishment of Dr Amjad Hussain.
Mostafiz was suffering from chronic disease on his heel and he was under the supervision of Dr Amjad, who, without checking his biopsy reports properly, conducted an operation on his leg saying suspecting he was suffering from Xanthoma.’
But later the problem was detected to be cancer that had been spread all over his body.
The teachers said that Mostafiz was taking treatment at an Indian hospital but his condition was deteriorating gradually.
