Land ports, duty stations to remain open on holidays
The National Bureau of Revenue and Land Port Authority have decided that all the land ports and duty stations on the Bangladesh-India border would remain open during the holidays until Eid-ul-Fitr.
The decision has been taken following a request from the commerce ministry with a view to maintaining uninterrupted imports of essential commodities, including onion during the month of Ramadan, said a press release issued by the commerce ministry on Thursday.
The release said that the decision will be effective from Jul 19 (today).
At the beginning of Ramadan, prices of green chilli and onion went up sharply as the country is mainly depended on imported onion.
In the face of extreme price hike, the government has decided to increase the import of green chilli and onion to keep the price affordable for the consumers.
After the government move, price of green chilli has gone down in the local market but the price of onion remained high.
To maintain uninterrupted supply and contain price hike of essentials, including onion, during the Ramadan, the NBR and the land port authorities have considered the request of the commerce ministry, said the release.
