Life thru the lens

A group photography exhibition titled Reunion of Life organised by Envisio, the media and photography club of Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Jahangirnagar University, is being held at Drik Gallery of Dhanmondi in the city.
Dr Mohammad Bakhtiar Rana, director of the Institute of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University, inaugurated the event on 22 July.
A total of 28 participants, who include current students, alumni members and faculty teachers of Jahangirnagar University, are displaying 50 photographs at the exhibition.
A variety of themes have revealed stories of human lives, most of which are reflections of emotional stresses and moods of the common society– the poverty stricken floating community apart from the hardworking labour force of males, females and children.
A number of displays have presented nature at her best with focus on birds and insects. Titled Foring, a splendidly colourful print of a dragon-fly that has been captured with the aid of macro-lens by Kuhu Mannan, a 38th batch student of the English department, is a major attraction of the show though it could not bag any award.
A number of photographs have depicted landscapes in wide-angled frames bringing out the intriguing magnificence of Mother Nature.
Titled Machhi (house fly), a submission by Farhana Afroze of English Department, has a good theme, one that shows a tiny fly seated upon the zoomed fingers of an old woman upon her partially exposed wrinkled face. The photograph seemingly contains a deeply sensitive message which could be the issue of a strong resemblance between the lives of the two characters— the fly and the poor elderly woman; both having an aimless and floating destination withstanding all odds and limitations of life.
The photograph Aguner poroshmoni has defined the raging splendour of burning fire in a unique way. Similarly, Circle of Life, Centre focussed and Fireworks have all presented elements of beauty with touch of semi-realism and subtle abstraction through colourful hues, motion and intelligent choice of composition.
The dreamlike effects of light and shade in a few presentations have brought in a sense of tranquil stillness apparently undisturbed by the ongoing flow of life.
Smiling faces and sparkling eyes of women and children have revealed hopes and aspirations of the future generations in a number of photos where the hardships and complications of life seem to be missing.
Nodimatrik by Al Mahmud of Drama and Dramatics Department, Urban Life by Gourob Kundu of Anthropology department and Nari by Kuhu Mannan of English Department have been awarded in respective order with three top prizes by Photography Bangladesh, a photographic organisation.
Among these three, the second place holder, Urban Life has presented a group of caged parrots on top of an open roof and an adjoining multi-storied building standing close-by. The encaged birds are symbolic representatives of the city dwellers who too, remain restricted within the confines of the cozy and squalid urban jungles.
“This club of ours, which is in its infancy of few months, wishes to help, train and foster all budding and experienced photographers of the university and hopes to arrange regular annual photo events not only within the departments but expectantly with other universities, as well”, said Md Hasibul Haque Sakib, a 37th batch IBA student and President of Envisio, the IBA-JU media and photography club.
The exhibition is open to visitors from 3:00pm to 8:00pm every day till 28 July.
