A six-member Bangladesh women’s weightlifting team has finally overcome a financial hardship set for a journey to Uzbekistan today to take part in the Asian Weightlifting Championship scheduled to be held in Tashkent from April 21-30. South Asian Games gold medalist Mabia Akter Simanta, two silver medalists Fulpoti Chakma and Rokeya Sultana Sathi along with Mollah Sabira Sultana will represent Bangladesh in the different weight categories of the championship.
As the Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation is in financial crisis they could bear the expenses of only four weightlifters, despite taking visas for 12 weightlifters.
The Bangladesh Olympic Association is providing the expenses of air tickets for Mabia, Fulpoti and Sathi while National Sports Council and Bangladesh Ansar are doing the same for Molla Sabira and coach Shahria Sultana.
The federation requested the organisers – Asian Weightlifting Federation – to manage accommodation, foods and transport cost for the team, which is approximately Tk six lakh.
BWF general secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed will accompany the team at his own expense.
The championship provides the participants a chance to secure Olympic wild-card by reaching a set-mark.
