Local and Korean artistes performed together in two consecutive shows held on Wednesday and Thursday at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Marking the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Republic of Korea and Bangladesh, Korean embassy arranged a vibrant cultural programme titled Charm of Korea where cultural flavours of both
countries were brought together. On both days, the programme commenced with performances by Bangladeshi artistes. To the amusement of the audience, Samir Hossain baul presented two famous songs of Lalon, followed by dance troupe Nrityanchal’s beautifully synchronised group recital with the song Majhi nao chhaira dey.
The charm of Korea began with B-boy world champion 2012 Jinjo Crew’s enthralling performance. The team started with a Dynamic B&B (Beat Box) where famous Korean beat boxer J-COP did the beat boxing and his team presented the b-boying. Another captivating performance by Jinjo Crew was Cap & Jacket.
Queen, an acclaimed band in traditional Korean music (Gugak) also performed at the event. The band presented an elegant Han Style for which it teamed up with two performers of authentic samulnori (a combination of music, folk dance and acrobatics) emphasising the Korean tradition.
The band presented a composition titled Queen’s Melody where the five-member band created fusion with Gugak instruments, K-pop and popular songs.
The most exciting performance of the evening was a fusion by the two teams Jinjo Crew and Queen. The teams made a terrific assimilation and harmony of old and new Korean musical trends. They even gave a minute’s performance of Korean rapper Psy’s Gangnam style.
Among the audience professor Fakrul Alam of Dhaka University told New Age, ‘The last one was a superb fusion work. I am really astonished.’ David Park, a Korean audience expressed, ‘I have enjoyed the baul songs as well as the b-boying.’
