Local people blocked the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway for more than four hours in the Sylhet city Thursday night in demand of resumption of power supply.
The people said power supply to the Shah Paran Gate, Khadimpara, Shantibag, Nipaban, Bahubal, Kallagram and Majortila of the city was suspended after a gusty wind swiped over the areas at around 9:00pm on Wednesday.
But, the Power Development Board authorities did not take step to resume the supply of power to the areas still Thursday evening despite repeated requests made by the residents.
At one point, the residents of the areas took to the streets at around 6:30pm on Thursday and started demonstration putting up a barricade on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway at Shah Paran Gate in the city in demand of immediate resumption of the power supply.
At that time, several hundred vehicles, including goods-laden trucks, buses, microbuses and cars were stranded at both of ends of the highway during the blockade.
Being informed, a team of Shah Paran police station reached the spot at around 7:30pm and tried to persuade the protesters to withdraw the blockade after assuring them of resuming the power supply in the shortest possible time, but they were not convinced.
The agitated locals claimed that they would not stop their demonstration until power supply to their respective areas was resumed.
To tackle the situation, the PDB authorities started restoring the supply line affected in Wednesday’s rainstorm and resumed the power supply at around 11:00pm on Thursday when the protestors withdrew the barricade, police and local sources said.
