Bangladesh Army won the hockey title of the Bangladesh Games after 29 years when they thrashed Faridpur 6-2 in the final at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. BKSP won bronze by defeating Dhaka 2-0 in the third place-deciding match.
The Army team, who last won the hockey title in 1984, included four current national players in Mimo, Koushik, Niloy and Kamruzzaman and three former national players – Issa Miah, Musa Miah and Yeamin, took control of the match from the very beginning.
Army went ahead in the 11th minute through Sabbir Hossain before Enamul restored parity from a penalty corner. Army were 2-1 up at the break after Milon had flicked home from close range.
After the restart, Army extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to a strike from national striker and Player of the Games Abdul Malek before national striker Hasan Jubair Niloy made it 3-2 for Faridpur.
Then Faridpur conceded a penalty stroke and gave up their hopes of any recovery and Army scored two more goals to finish with a 6-2 finally.
In tennis, Ishita Afroze of BKSP was crowned as the new women’s singles champion when she beat Sharmin Alam Sharda 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 in the final at the National Tennis Complex.
It was the first crown for Ishita, who was forced to retire in the last national championship final against Sharda due to an injury, but this time she won the first tennis gold for BKSP in Bangladesh Games.
Sharda also had her glory moments as she earned gold in the women’s doubles teaming up Sathi Sarker to beat Afrana Islam Priti and Shah Safina Laxmi 6-4, 7-5 in the final.
All four gold medals in the body building events were grabbed by Bangladesh Ansar when Nazmus Sakib, Titu Das, Abu Sayeed and Suman Chandra overpowered their respective rivals to win gold in the 60kg, 65kg, 70kg and 75kg categories.
Bangladesh Ansar also showed there potentiality in Judo when they won five gold medals among the 18 decided on the day. The Border Guard of Bangladesh also earned five gold medals but they finished behind Ansar on silver count.
The semi-final line up in football was also confirmed with Barisal, Jhenaidah, Noakhali and BKSP moving to last four.
In the first semi final Barisal will face Jhenaidah and BKSP will play with Noakhali in the second semi final today in the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
