Sri Lanka received a major blow ahead of the two-match Twenty20 series against Bangladesh as key batsman Mahela Jayawardene sustained a left-palm injury during a practice session at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Tuesday. Jayawardene is now unlikely to play in the first Twenty20 today after picking up the injury while trying to catch a ball thrown at him during a high catch session. He started bleeding and was sent immediately to the Metropolitan Hospital, where he required three stitches.
The team would not, however, rule him out entirely for today’s first Twenty20.
‘Mahela is not yet ruled out,’ said Sri Lanka’s team manager Michael de Zoysa, ‘We can only tell about it tomorrow [Wednesday] morning.’
