Bikalpodhara Bangladesh (BDB) will announce in a day or two to forge an alliance with the main opposition BNP to contest the polls together against the current Awami League-led grand alliance.
To this end, Bikalpadhara joint secretary general Mahi B Chowdhury held over an hour-long meeting with BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday night at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
After the meeting, Mahi told reporters that he would make an announcement about their teaming up with the nationalist force within three days through a press conference.
BDB sources said the party’s top leaders have different opinions about joining hands with BNP. According to the sources, Mahi had another meeting earlier in the day with his party’s presidium members and some senior leaders. At the meeting, some leaders suggested him to join BNP as a partner of the BNP-led 18-party alliance while other opposed it, and recommended joining hands only with BNP instead of being an alliance partner.
The leaders, however, entrusted BDB president Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury with all power to take the final decision in this regard.
Badruddoza Chowdhury, a close associate of BNP’s founder late president Ziaur Rahman, and its founding secretary general, floated Bikalpodhara Bangladesh with some mid-ranking BNP leaders after quitting BNP in 2004.
