Mainuddin wins Shilpakala Academy Award
Talented artist Md Mainuddin has won the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award for his drawing Monajat [prayer] at the 20th National Art Biennale, organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, present as the chief guest of the opening ceremony of the biennale, handed over the award to Mainuddin on Saturday at the auditorium of the National Art Gallery, BSA.‘This award inspires me a lot,’ Mainuddin told New Age. ‘As an artist I wish to continue my artistic career till death.’
The 76 by 152cm drawing Monajat depicting an old, weary man with his hands joined together in prayer. A sombre, downcast look on his face makes the artwork something special.
Mainuddin’s drawing has been done in charcoal on paper, mounted on canvas, which is covered by newspaper clippings of war, bloodshed, conflicts happening in our country and across the world. The drawing, therefore, seems to portray a man praying for a better, peaceful world.
The charcoal on canvas drawing is on display at the National Art Gallery along with 278 artworks by other artists.
There is another painting by Mainuddin on display titled The Lost, done in oil on canvas, which shows a forlorn man with a devastated look and his hand on the side of his forehead in utter dismay.
With drawing as his forte, Mainuddin had his debut solo drawing exhibition titled Norobodhi Jonosrot held in Dhaka Art Centre from May 31 to June 17, which drew a lot of acclaim from art aficionados and connoisseurs in the country.
His works have also been displayed in many group exhibitions at home and abroad.
Born in 1983 in Bhola, Bangladesh, Mainuddin is currently doing his MFA under the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University.
