Expatriate filmmaker Makbul Chowdhury’s three short films were
screened at Dhaka Art Centre on Friday.
The films made by Chowdhury depict various interesting subjects. The presentation style is also different from each other.
The session began with screening of Raktajoba, made in 2006. The UK based maker gives an interesting aspect of circumcision, which has a significant impact on a rural Bangladeshi boy. The boy begins to feel the difference between his past days and the days after the circumcision, especially when he meets his friend, a Hindu girl.
The second short film titled Maya features a ticket seller at a railway station. He becomes passionate to a particular female hand that he can identify in midst of thousands without even watching the face of the woman.
The audience found the film interesting seeing the frustration of the ticket seller while watching the woman’s hand holding another man’s hand on the platform.
The last film of the evening was Black Leaf, which was of more intriguingly thematic.
It features a Santal man, who kills his superior officer being humiliated by the communal minded man.
Distinguished guests like artist Dhali Al Mamoon and filmmaker Manzarehassin Murad enjoyed the films and appreciated Chowdhury’s thought provoking films based on very ordinary stories. They also praised cinematography of the short films.
