NATIONAL ART BIENNALE
Mamun wins Dipa Haque Award
Young artist Anisuzzaman Mamun has won Dipa Haque award for his acrylic on canvas titled Reality Show-2013-01 at 20th National Art Biennale, organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
This national award has been introduced in memory of renowned
artist Dipa Haque who died in 1999.
The award winning painting by Mamum, tracing the political history of the country is a thought provoking, reflective piece and demands one’s careful contemplation. The canvas depicts a bar for hanging convicts and nine ballot boxes in a foggy backdrop; seven skulls in the forefront along with a blood smeared book, and a spectacle scattered across an arid, parched land. According to the artist, the skulls symbolise the Birsreshthos (the seven greatest heroes of the war of independence) while the blood smeared book represents the blood bath during the nine-month war and the ballot boxes symbolically illustrate the nine national elections that took place after the country’s independence.
‘Through the painting, I have attempted to reveal the discrimination, corruption and crime carried out by politicians and bureaucrats in the country, which the people of our country have liberated by fighting and sacrificing their lives,’ revealed Mamun in an interview with New Age.
‘Through the spectacle, I wanted to represent the founding president of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The aim of portraying the spectacle was to reveal my deep resentment towards those who assassinated such a great leader,’ the artist continued.
Mamun has completed his MFA and BFA in painting from the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Chittagong. He has already participated in about 20 group exhibitions and several art workshops.
