While most of the TV plays to be aired on the occasion of Eid tend to only entertain, actor-director-playwright Mamunur Rashid has come up with a serious issue as theme of his two plays scheduled to be screened during the Eid.
Both of his two plays— ‘Eid-er Rang’ and ‘Bandmaster-er Qurbani’—upholds the legacy of the country’s War of Independence. ‘Eid-er Rong’ will be aired on ATN Bangla on the day before the Eid at 10:50 pm while BTV will air ‘Band Master-er Qurbani’ on the second day of their Eid special programme at 8:30 pm.
The play Eid-er Rang is set in the 1971; the hero of ‘Eid-er Rong’ is an ordinary postman, who serves messages to freedom fighters ignoring the local collaborators of Pakistani army during the war. The collaborators execute him on the day before the Eid day in 1971. Mamunur Rashid is the writer and director of the play in which Liaquat Ali Lucky, Chanchal Chowdhury and Mamun himself are the major cast members.
The hero of Mamun’s another play ‘Bandmaster-er Qurbani’ is an bandmaster who lead his band to play the inspiring song ‘Joy bangla banglar joy’, ignoring the order of a Pakistani army officer of playing the national anthem of Pakistan on the Eid day in 1971. Subsequently he was killed. Written and directed by Mamunur Rashid the play has ATM Shamsuzzaman, Shubhashish Bhowmick and Mamun himself in the lead roles.
‘People celebrated two Eid days during the nine-month war in 1971,’ said Mamunur Rashid, ‘Through my imagination, I tried to show the contemporary audience how the Eid festivals were for the masses during the War of Independence.’
‘The common people had remarkable contribution during the war; however, their participation is always ignored. That is why the masses are the heroes of my plays,’ he added.
On selecting such serious issues for Eid plays, Mamun said, ‘These plays do have elements of entertainment in a different way. Since audience these days watch TV plays attentively during the Eid celebration, I believe legacy of the War of Independence can add more colour in the Eid entertainment.’
Mamunur Rashid also hopes to make more plays on the War of Independence on the occasions of Eid in Future.
