A man suspected of being involved in snatching was beaten to death at Dattapara of Tongi in Gazipur on Friday. The identity of the deceased could not be immediately established.
The police and local people said that a group of snatchers took away the bag about 11:00am from a woman who was carrying Tk 30,000. The woman, Kohinoor Begum, and her daughter shouted for help.
Local people then chased the group and managed to capture one of them. The crowd beat him up.
The police rescued him in a critical condition and he was pronounced dead after he had been sent to Tongi Hospital.
Tongi police subinspector Monwar Hossain confirmed the incident and said that they were yet to establish the identity of the deceased, aged about 20.
The body was sent to the Gazipur General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
