Today is the 67th anniversary of the death of Bengali novelist and short story writer Manik Bandopadhyay.
Born on May 19, 1908 to Harikar Bandopadhyay and Niroda Devi in Dumka, a small town in Santal Parganas district in the state of Bihar, British India, Manik Bandopadhyay was the fifth of the fourteen children of his parents.
He is regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century Bangla literature. Although he lived only 48 years, he enriched Bangla literary treasure throve penning 34 novels and more than 250 short stories.
He was influenced by Freud, Jung, and Adler in his early life.
His notable works include Padma Nadir Majhi, Putul Nacher Itikatha, Shahartali, Janani, Diba Ratrir Kabya, Ahimsa, Darpan, Chatushkone, Pashapashi, Sarbojanin, Nagpash, Feriwala, Arogya, Haraf and Halud Nodi Sobuj Bon.
His most popular short stories are Atashi Mami, Pragoitihashik, Mihi o Mota Kahini, Sarisreep, Bou, Samudrer Swad, Bhejal, Haludpora, Paristhiti, Khatian, Matir Mashul and others.
He died on December 3, 1956.
