Mariner Young’s Club enhanced their title hopes when they beat Abahani Limited 2-1 in their penultimate game of the Premier Hockey League at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium on Monday.
Mariners’ keeper Mehrab Hossain Kiron put on a brilliant performance to help his side get important three points which put them on top of the table with 40 points from 15 matches, two points clear of Usha Krira Chakra, who will face Mohammedan Sporting Club in their 15th match today.
Mariners took the lead through Waqas Sharif in the ninth minute of the game. Abahani’s Pakistani star Shafqat Rasool levelled the margin in the 23rd minute.
Czech defender Thomas Prochazka, however, converted a penalty corner in the 63rd minute to seal the victory for Mariners.
Meanwhile, a brilliant performance by Russell Mahmud Jimmy helped Mohammedan Sporting Club managing an easy 5-1 victory over Wanderers Sporting Club in the first match of the day. Jimmy scored four goals.
