Mask art is getting popularity in the contemporary art scene. Masks created by some experimental artists are on display at Galleri Kaya at Uttara.
The 19 participating artists created colourful masks employing various techniques and mediums in the show titled ‘Mukh O Mukhosh 4’, the
fourth exhibition of the series that commenced on May 31.
A total number of 106 pieces are on display. Various materials like paper, wood, pigment, appliqué, metal, glass and mixed medium have been used to create the masks. The exhibition has both traditional and modern masks on display.
A wide array of masks resembling tribal demons, symbolic gods, motifs usually used in traditional pottery art and human faces with various expressions can be found at the exhibition. The masks convey diverse emotions like longing, yearning, pain, happiness, romance, the pride of accomplishment etcetera.
Every mask seems to be individual and distinct. The mask artists, who are participating in the exhibition, include Tarun Ghosh, Kazi Rakib, Masuda Kazi, Saidul Haque Juise, Faruk Ahamad Debashish Pal, Rajaul Islam Lovelu, Md Abdul Momen Milton, Bishwajit Paul, Khandakar Nasir Ahmed, Dulal Chandra Das, Abdur Rahim, Pintu Chandra Deb, Debdas Malakar, Sandip Kumer Debnath, Kanok Kumar Pathak, Ananna Dey, Amit Kuch and Rituparna Dhar.
‘The ancient art form of the country, mask-making, is near extinction today in the country. However, some young artists of the country are trying to revive the art form’, Saidul Kabir, a visitor said.
The previous exhibitions of this series were organised by the same gallery in 2005, 2009 and 2011 respectively.
The event is open for all daily from 11am to 7.30 pm till June 11.
