Causes drop in generation by 300MW
Power crisis turned severe in the country again on Saturday as electricity generation was dropped by 300MW when one unit of the 450MW Meghnaghat independent power plant was shut down after it developed technical faults.
The 225MW steam turbine unit of the combined cycle IPP tripped at around 4:00pm and the power plant authorities brought down the plant’s generation to 140MW following the tripping, said officials of Power Development Board.
‘They [IPP authorities] told us that there was a fault at one of the two units and that they brought down the generation to 140MW. We are waiting for more details,’ PDB member, Tapan Kumar Chowdhury told New Age Saturday evening.
When asked whether the private power plant authorities had intimated when the plant would resume full operation, he said, ‘They are working but yet to give us details.’
Following the drop in power generation by 300MW, the frequency of power outages has increased across the country, especially in the capital city and its adjacent areas. The overall power generation of the PDB came down to around 3581MW during evening peak hours on Saturday against around 3900MW on Friday.
Dhaka Power Distribution Company officials said that they were receiving around 1310MW of electricity for the capital during morning hours but their allocation was curtailed to 1120MW during afternoon, resulting in severe power cuts.
‘However, the supply of electricity in the city was increased to around 1350MW during evening hours against the demand of around 1600-1800MW,’ said a DPDC official. Most of the other parts of the country, however, faced 10-16 hours of power cuts on Saturday because of the fall in power supply.
Power officials said that although the electricity situation had improved in the last week, the closing of 210MW Siddhirganj power plant in the early hours of Friday and the latest closure of a Meghnaghat unit had worsened the situation.
Power officials said that the demand for electricity had also increased in the last two to three days because of the sweltering heat.
The PDB generated around 3800-4000MW in the last week when the temperature was tolerable because of rains.
